Interview with Thomas Wood
19 January 2006I think its could be very interesting not only for me to have some little info about people who are behind different works in gnome community. So i would like to start small and unprofessional interviews with people i already know.
First Person i will present you is Thomas Wood (thos). He is very respected guy in #gnome-art, very responsible man and very tolerating in communication.
So Thomas, can you maybe give some introduction help.
- Tell us who you are, were you are born, where do you work or study.
I was born, and still live, in England. I graduated last year from a computer science degree and work as a consultant in a small "IT solutions" company.
- On what projects/tasks are you in gnome community ?
My main involvement for the past few years has been maintaining and developing art.gnome.org. However, I am also involved in maintaining gnome-themes, gtk-engines and my own module, gnome-backgrounds. I've also organised and helped out at GNOME events in the UK, such as the LinuxExpo stands.
- How long are you related to gnome ?
I probably started using it around 2000, and I started contributing to the community in 2001. So it's been about 5 years.
- You are working on Art.Gnome.org. How do you comes to this ?
I first started my own theme website, written entirely myself called sunshineinabag.co.uk. Simply because I thought it was a cool domain, and themes.org had been offline for some time. Soon after this time, art.gnome.org we being developed, and I became invovled in that too.
- Something new and cool you work on at Art.Gnome.org ? What can we expect to see in next time on this web page ?
There are loads of things on the todo list - we have a new screenshot section coming soon, and hopefully support for theme collections.
- Something you would wish for this project ?
I'm finding I have less time than I used to to work on art.gnome.org, and I want to do other things, so I'd love to see more people to get involved with the development and day-to-day running. Thankfully just recently we've had a lot of interest so I'm hopeful that art.gnome.org will continue for some time yet.
- You are working on other things for gnome too. Can you say something about it, about Gnome Plus Pack ?
The GNOME Plus Pack is really an idea to make GNOME more fun for end users. It's something akin to the old Plus! packs for Windows. Nothing serious, but it just makes using GNOME a better experiance for people - it makes them feel more in control of their desktop since they get to choose an interesting and different look.
- Is there something you specially love in gnome as desktop ?
Simplicity - it just works the way I want it to out of the box. I spend very little of my time configuring or tweaking things.
- Lately there was discussion about GTK animation themes. What is your personal opinion to this topic ? Is there any other feature for gnome/gtk+ you would like see in near feature ?
The animation is a nice idea, although personally I usually find it more distracting than usefull. I think this sort of flexibility is needed, but it needs to be implemented properly in GTK, and not hacked into the themes.
